I had the pleasure of attending a Women In Film panel discussion with four amazing and talented female filmmakers - Barbara Ann O’Leary (the moderator), Laura Goodenow (director, Year By The Sea), Andie Redwine (writer and producer, Paradise Rediscovered), and Nadine Truong (German-born, Vietnamese filmmaker). The event was part of the Heartland Film Festival that takes place in Indiana and hearing these stories was quite eye opening.

One of the biggest struggles in filmmaking is the production and marketing costs. During the panel, these women discussed some grassroots ways to push your project forward and how important camaraderie and connections really are.

Laura Goodenow talked about how she struggled with getting funding for Year By The Sea (based on the NY Times bestseller). One production company told her, “Oh, that sounds like a great idea, good luck with that”. After many failed attempts to find funding, she took it upon herself and started a Kickstarter campaign. She ended up exceeding her goal of $50,000 ($53,012 total from 277 backers).

Resources like social media and online fundraising outlets are a great way to get started, but the most important thing is to just start. They encouraged inspiring female filmmakers to always write and constantly work on your projects to keep things moving forward. They stressed the importance of finding other female filmmakers to connect with and also identify yourself with female directors and filmmakers that inspire you.

I was truly moved by this event. Seeing these women persevere to get their projects out into the world, despite some of the setbacks they faced, was exciting. It is so important to see diversity in films so that all audiences have characters to identify with, but it is also important to see and connect with successful, real-life inspirations to keep our industries moving forward.
